“Smaller than a grain of salt and narrow enough to fit through the eye of a needle. That’s how MSCHF, an American art collective based in Brooklyn, New York, describes their latest creation: a handbag. At an auction held on Wednesday June 28, the North American group, founded in 2016, sold it for nearly 57,000 euros, he explains in a statement.

Its new owner will not be able to put much inside: the bag measures 657 by 222 by 700 micrometers, smaller than one millimeter. But no matter its size, since MSCHF was inspired by the OnTheGo model, from the luxury brand Louis Vuitton. “There are large handbags, regular handbags and small handbags, but this is the last word in bag miniaturization,” the group says.

In its statement, MSCHF explains that the bag was made using two-photon polymerization printing methods. “This is the most advanced stage of miniaturization of a bag. If it is possible to see it with the naked eye, it is more visible using a microscope, which is included in the sale price in order to be able to observe the handbag correctly.

The Joopiter group handled the sale. A piece of data that could have posed a problem, the auction house belonging to Pharell Williams, also creative director of Louis Vuitton. However, MSCHF did not ask the group for any authorization before creating this miniature handbag and using its logo.

MSCHF, accustomed to marketing moves

The group of artists had already made the buzz by creating a pair of sneakers inspired by Nike. The “Satan shoes” featured satanic symbols and real drops of human blood. And as a wink, some 666 copies of this pair had been sold. After considering legal action, Nike backtracked after reaching an out-of-court settlement.

Then, the collective put on sale the shoes “Big Red Boots”, a pair of boots inspired by the character Astro Boy.
