As a result of inter-institutional work between the Isidro Ayora Gynecological Obstetric Hospital (HGOIA) and the Oncological Surgery Service of the Eugenio Espejo Specialties Hospital (HEEE) of Quito, in situ vulvar cancer surgery was performed. The articulation allowed the formation of a multidisciplinary team to care for patients with gynecological cancer.
At the end of April, María S., 60, was referred to the HGOIA from a medical center with a diagnosis of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (cervix lesion), a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection, and chronic vulvitis. . After performing all the respective tests, a biopsy confirmed a squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the vulva, so it was decided to intervene with an extirpation of the lesion.

I just ask that you continue to be patient and I thank you again for everything you have done in my life.”says Maria, as she recovers from surgery.
Ligia Saltos, a gynecology treating physician, says that the intervention was successful and early. “Currently, it is important to be aware of its evolution because there are multiple risk factors; In addition, multidisciplinary management should continue. The patient presented a good post-surgical evolution and requires periodic check-ups and follow-up by the HGOIA gynecology outpatient service and HEEE oncology.
The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has a gynecological care service in all first-level establishments nationwide. It is important that patients are able to recognize risk factors and go to check-ups periodically, as well as that 9-year-old girls can count on the vaccine to prevent HPV, which is administered in all health centers in the country.
