The Eid el Kebir (Tabaski) celebration of this year 2023 took place on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. And as is customary, the Muslim faithful of Benin sacrificed to tradition. They celebrated the feast and shared the meat of the immolated sheep not only with their families but also with their relatives, friends and the poor, as the history of the said feast teaches. A history that the imam Djalil Yessoufou of the Aidjedo mosque, wanted to remind the faithful Muslims who came in large numbers to the Aidjedo roundabout to attend the final prayer and the first immolation. During this meeting, the imam in his sermon clarified what this commemoration must symbolize for a man.

Iman Djalil Yessoufou: “This celebration teaches the culture of sacrifice and sharing”

“These are lessons we need to learn from celebrating Tabaski Day. It’s not just about sacrificing and just praying. These acts must have an impact on our behavior. And the behavior here is the culture of sacrifice, of volunteerism. Which unfortunately deserted the forum nowadays. No one today likes to sacrifice themselves just for the good cause. Everyone runs after interests. What we are celebrating today is a great sacrifice on the part of Ibrahim or Abraham. Because he saw in the dream that God ordered him to sacrifice his son (to cut his throat) and he wanted to do it. But God, merciful and merciful, has given a lesson to all humanity that human space is to be preserved. You don’t cut the man’s throat. And that is why all those who slaughter or kill in the name of Islam have nothing to do with Islam. The motive or the reason for their act is elsewhere. Otherwise, Islam does not teach violence. Islam does not teach the humiliation of man. If God had let Abraham go all the way, you can imagine what our world would become. It is therefore to say stop and stop to us and we take this opportunity to also say stop and stop to all those who, in the name of Islam, for personal and individual interests, even sometimes unacknowledged interests, cause harm to their next. You know that here in Benin, there are currently a lot of displaced people; people who have not been able to continue living in their homes; people who are forced to leave their villages to seek refuge in towns and urban areas; you know that like Benin, Burkina, Mali, and so on, we cause harm to humans in the name of Islam. So this feast that we have just celebrated once again today is a reminder for each of us. We must try to put the humiliation of man on all levels aside to give him his dignity; the dignity that God has given him since his creation. This is the first message we passed today. The second message is that of sharing. As you know, the meat of the sheep that we have sacrificed is to be shared between friends, between families, and with the poor whether they are Muslims or not. This spirit, this culture of sharing must be present throughout the year. It’s not just for Tabaski Day. May God grant us life until next year”.
