When a few words make you jump. During a meeting of the interministerial crisis unit, Friday June 30, Emmanuel Macron attacked video games to explain the violence observed in the streets of France since the death of Nahel, shot dead by a policeman in Nanterre, Tuesday 27 June.

The riots triggered are mobilizing many very young people, as the Head of State pointed out. He first blamed the role of social networks in the rise of tensions. But it was his remark about video games that sparked anger.

“Platforms and social networks play a considerable role in the movements of the last days”, began the President of the Republic. “We have seen on several of them – Snapchat, TikTok and several others – both the organization of violent rallies taking place, but a form of mimicry of violence”, he assured, before to continue: “Which, among the youngest, leads to a form of exit from reality, and we sometimes have the feeling that some of them live in the street with the video games that have intoxicated them. »

“Really perched”

Immediately, many “gamers” were ironic about this strange statement, described as “really perched”. Some, moreover, have not failed to point out the contradictions of the president, who has communicated several times on gaming and e-sport events, such as the Z Event or the Major Counter-Strike, of which he had announced the next holding in France, a few months ago.
