Houston Rockets Secure Fred VanVleet in Free Agency
The Houston Rockets made a major splash in free agency on Friday, signing point guard Fred VanVleet to a lucrative deal. The Rockets had entered the free agency period with $64 million in cap space and were determined to address several key needs in their roster.

Head coach Ime Udoka has wasted no time in revamping the coaching staff and building connections with the players. The team’s focus in free agency was consistently on finding a lead ballhandler, culminating in the drafting of Amen Thompson. With VanVleet’s mentorship, Thompson can now develop his game without being rushed into a significant role.
VanVleet’s impact extends beyond his counting stats. Despite a down shooting year, he recorded a career-high 7.2 assists per game and proved indispensable to Toronto’s offense. His playmaking abilities and on-court leadership will greatly benefit the Rockets. Defensively, VanVleet is known for his tenacity and will enhance Houston’s efforts on that end of the floor.
The presence of VanVleet raises the performance level of Houston’s young core. Coupled with Udoka’s new offensive system emphasizing movement, catch-and-shoot efficiency should improve for players like Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr., and Kevin Porter Jr. Additionally, VanVleet’s partnership with Alperen Şengün, a talented big man, holds great promise.
While the Rockets are still active in the free-agent market, chasing Dillon Brooks and Brook Lopez, they can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing their top target is secured. VanVleet’s arrival marks a significant step toward bringing the Rockets back into NBA relevancy.
