These are two names that could have claimed a place in the top 10 of the tour this year. But the vagaries of the unforgivable roads of France will have decided otherwise. Both involved in a heavy fall 22 kilometers from the finish of the 1st stage of the 2023 edition, in Bilbao (Spain), Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz both abandon this Grande Boucle.

For Mas (Movistar), there was no doubt about this abandonment since the Spaniard had been forced to throw in the towel at the time of his fall, and had never left. The Ecuadorian (EF Education-Easy Post) on the other hand, although diminished and more than 15 minutes behind the winner of the day Adam Yates, had finished the stage. It was his team who announced this Saturday evening, on social networks, that he would not continue the race.

“Richard Carapaz will not start the second stage of the Tour de France after an ultrasound revealed a small fracture of the left kneecap, explains EF Pro Cycling on Twitter. He also needed three stitches to close the cut on the same knee. Richard suffered no other injuries in the fall and will return home to begin his recovery. »

Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, 30, has a CV that commands respect. He revealed himself in 2019 by winning the Tour of Italy and finished 2nd in the Tour of Spain in 2020 and 3rd in the Tour de France in 2021. For his part, Enric Mas finished 5th in the Tour de France in 2020 and 6th in 2021. Above all, he finished 2nd in the Vuelta twice in 2021 and 2022.
