A donation of 450 milliliters is enough to save up to three lives.
Currently there are 556 Blood Banks distributed throughout the national territory.
Mexico is one of the countries with the lowest blood donation record, especially when it is altruistic.

There are few actions as valuable as the blood donation. First of all, something so simple in appearance is the basis for saving millions of lives around the world. Although one of the problems is that there are countries like Mexico where the interest is zero and therefore the levels are so low.

Regarding this issue, the Health sector has state-of-the-art technology to obtain safe blood, free of infectious agents such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or hepatitis C, syphilis and chagas, among others. This was stated by the person in charge of the Blood Bank of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER)Mario Alberto Noya Rodríguez.

How many Blood Banks are there in Mexico?

He reported that there are 556 blood banks distributed throughout the country, where people can go to donate. In addition, each 450-milliliter unit saves up to three lives.

He explained that these plasma reception centers have modern technology, a health license and guidelines issued by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Coferpis) and by the National Center for Blood Transfusion, which establish the disposal of human blood and its components for therapeutic purposes.

In an interview to promote altruistic donation, he highlighted the need to raise awareness among citizens that blood is sometimes an irreplaceable element to save life.

Blood is a resource to improve the health of patients in intensive care or who will undergo high-risk surgical procedures, who require concentrates, platelets, fresh and frozen plasma, and other blood components.

He specified that in developed countries there is citizen awareness about altruistic donations, and this is due to culture and education. In Mexico, most of the units obtained in blood banks are by replacement, that is, from relatives or people known to hospitalized patients.

Noya Rodríguez explained that most of the plasma obtained from donations is from positive blood groups. The negative type is rare and very few people come to donate. This causes a permanent deficit and when a patient with a negative type requires a transfusion, deposits are used in other hospitals to save her life.

Blood donation can never be compulsory

In this regard, the head of the Blood Bank of the General Hospital of Mexico (HMG) “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”, Yadira Béjar Ramírez, ruled out the obligation to donate blood in our country, since article 327 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States states that: trade in organs, tissues and cells is prohibited.

The donation of these for therapeutic purposes will be governed by the principles of altruism, non-profit and confidentiality, so that their collection and use will be strictly free of charge.

He reported that, in 2022, more than 21,000 altruistic donations were registered at HGM for the benefit of patients at this and other hospitals, since plasma from negative blood groups has been collected and sent to medical units that request it to save lives. , because this type of blood is scarce in the country.
