As part of Drug Awareness Week, MK Simon Davidson (Yesh Atid) took to the podium to talk about how his father, who was a famous doctor, fell for alcohol.
“There are more than 100,000 alcoholics in the State of Israel. Transparent people we do not know are: doctors, lawyers, high-tech people, even poor people on the streets,” Davidson said in the plenum.

“My father was like that,” he added. “My father was a very famous anesthesiologist in the central part of the country, the deputy director of Hillel Yaffe Hospital, a respectable, durable, educated man. My father fell into alcohol and fell very hard.”
Davidson recounts: “My parents divorced and there was a time like this, it was a trigger that made him fall for a bitter drop. I remember nights I had to come and break into my dad’s house, Dr. Davidson, a person everyone knows, and pick him up from the floor, wash him, clean him And make sure he does not drink.
He would hide the alcohol in places you would not believe, under the sink, inside the toilet and you do not think he is drinking and after two hours you realize that he drank again, that he is drunk again, that he can not stand on his feet. It took a year and two years and one day I got a call from a swimmer I trained and told me that a terrible incident had happened and my father fell, an ambulance arrived and in the ambulance he got alcohol, drank it and got terrible stomach poisoning and was hospitalized. “
“I decided not to go ahead with it,” he adds, “I tied him up and put him in rehab for an amazing place in Ramat Gan. I accompanied him for six months, paid a lot of money and my father’s group had ten people: doctors, lawyers and a former MK. “The group remained two. My father is one of the people who survived.”
“I’m proud of him, I’m proud of him being 15 years dry, he goes to schools once a week and tells the story of his life. Not of a homeless man from the street, of a senior doctor in the State of Israel, a man who lacked nothing. “In such cases, I link my father to them and he helps them. This is the way to help these people, these are respectable people who you will not know are alcoholics.”
Our country needs to invest a lot more in these people, they are not criminals, they are not thieves, they are not rapists. They are sick people, it’s a disease like any other disease. Alcoholism is a disease. Must invest resources and save these people. They are not transparent, they are people like us and we need to help them.
