The number of divorces is actually falling – just not for those who have already celebrated their silver anniversary. Psychologists explain the trend and have an idea what protects against alienation.

Bill Gates and his wife Melinda lasted 27 years, that’s how long they were a married couple. Then, in May 2021, they suddenly announced their separation. He was 66 at the time and she was 57. It was the most expensive divorce of all time: the Microsoft founder had to transfer the equivalent of around 60 billion euros to his ex – half of his assets. There are only rumors about the background of the divorce. But the Gates couple were in line with the trend with their decision to divorce: more people than ever before dare to separate even after more than 25 years together, in the USA experts even state a “grey divorce revolution”.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of divorces after the silver wedding anniversary has also increased dramatically in Germany: according to a current analysis, only 19,100 long-term marriages were divorced in 1997; in 2022 there were 24,300. Both partners are often well over 50. It is surprising that the divorce rate is falling overall. Only late divorces are increasing sharply, they now account for every sixth case.
