New Study Recommends Afternoon Exercise for Blood Sugar Control in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — A recent study conducted by researchers from the Brigham and Joslin Diabetes Center has revealed that individuals with type 2 diabetes may benefit from exercising in the afternoon rather than in the morning.

The study, which involved over 2,400 overweight people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, monitored the participants’ physical activity levels using a device that measured movement vibration or acceleration. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that those who engaged in “moderate to vigorous” physical activity in the afternoon experienced the greatest decrease in blood glucose levels.

Dr. Roland Middlebeck, a co-author of the study, emphasized the significance of timing in physical activity. He stated, “Timing seems to matter… Going forward, we may have more data and empirical evidence for patients to provide more personalized recommendations.”

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and occurs when the body becomes insulin resistant or fails to produce enough insulin, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing complications such as nerve damage, vision and hearing problems, kidney disease, heart disease, and premature death.

Dr. Lucy Chambers, director of research communications at Diabetes UK, commented on the study’s findings. She stressed the importance of staying physically active to control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. Dr. Chambers also emphasized the need for individuals to find physical activities they enjoy and can incorporate into their daily routines.

This observational study has some limitations as it did not consider factors such as sleep or diet. However, it provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of afternoon exercise for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

The study’s findings have been published in the journal Diabetes Care, shedding light on the importance of timing in physical activity for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes patients.]
