The Swedish government is taking significant steps to reinforce the country’s commitment to global climate work. In line with the Paris Agreement, the government aims to strengthen the conditions for the Swedish program for international climate investments.

The government acknowledges that the climate crisis is a global issue that affects every corner of the world. It emphasizes that reducing emissions within Sweden alone is not enough if other countries continue to emit greenhouse gases. As a prosperous and well-developed nation, Sweden has a responsibility to lead by example and pave the way for other countries in their transition towards a sustainable future.

To achieve this, Sweden plans to collaborate with other nations under the guidelines of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. By supporting climate change initiatives in developing countries, Sweden aims to contribute to global emission reductions, promote private investment in climate measures, and achieve its own climate policy goals in a cost-effective manner.

The Swedish Energy Agency, responsible for managing Sweden’s program for international climate efforts, has been working on method development and capacity building for Article 6 collaborations since 2018. Now, the agency is ready to initiate concrete collaborations to realize tangible climate outcomes.

To facilitate these collaborations effectively, the government has expanded the authorization framework for the program. The framework, which was previously set at SEK 450 million, has now been increased to SEK 1.5 billion until 2032. This expansion enables long-term agreements that are crucial for implementing climate cooperation within the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. It is considered a key factor in contributing significantly to the nation’s climate policy goals.

With these strengthened initiatives, Sweden reaffirms its commitment to global climate action. By providing support and resources for international climate efforts, Sweden aims to foster a collaborative approach that will bring about meaningful and sustainable change worldwide.
