In almost all shampoos or care creams, there are surfactants, essential for producing the emulsion of products that do not mix, such as water and oil. The problem is that they are not biodegradable and therefore very polluting for the environment.

To “green” the formula, a start-up from Rennes, SurfactGreen, has developed biosourced surfactants from rapeseed and beetroot, guaranteed to be 60 times less ecotoxic than petroleum-derived products and 95% biodegradable. And to industrialize the production of these components, this young shoot has chosen to join forces with the chemical company Orrion Chemical Orgaform (OCO).

Based in Semoy, in the Orléans area, this company, which already invested two years ago in the recycling of foam mattresses, is going to create a new synthesis unit to manufacture this range of surfactants. OCO, which benefits from the support of ADEME through the France Relance plan, will inject 3.2 million euros into this innovative facility, well suited to green chemistry, and whose start-up is scheduled for 2024.

With this “demonstrator”, the company, which employs 48 people and also produces industrial adhesives, will manufacture more than 1,000 tonnes of surfactants per year for its Breton partner, for the cosmetics market or other sectors, such as construction. But with this pilot unit, it also intends to interest other manufacturers, such as paint manufacturers, and to double the production capacity of its new workshop.
