Donut-shaped rock on Mars – NASA/JPL-CALTECH/ASU/MSSS/LANL/CNES/IRAP
MADRID, 3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars captured from about 100 meters this donut-shaped rock in Jezero Crater with his Remote Microscopic Imager (RMI) on June 22, 2023.
Oddly shaped rocks are not uncommon, whether on Earth or Mars; often formed over eons when the winds hit the rocky walls.
This particular rock may have formed after a smaller rock (or rocks) eroded away near its center. That left a cavity that was later enlarged by the wind, reports NASA.
Another image shows the same rock in its broader context, when it was first detected by the rover’s Mastcam-Z instrument. from about 400 meters away on April 15, 2023.
