An app by the Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, designed similarly to Twitter, is in the starting blocks. The app called “Threads” has been listed in the app stores for iPhones and Android smartphones since Monday and should be available for download in the coming days. “Threads is the place to come together and discuss everything from the topics you care about to the trends of tomorrow,” the description reads.

Meta announced in mid-March that it was working on a new social network, the description of which is reminiscent of a potential competitor to Twitter. “We are considering a decentralized, independent social network that will enable the exchange of written messages in real time,” the group said at the time.

Musk is changing Twitter

According to information from the specialized website “Platformer”, the application should be designed in such a way that it is interoperable with other networks of the same type. This would be a break with the previous strategy of the large online corporations, which always rely on closed environments with their own rules of use.

The choice of interoperability also sets Threads apart from Twitter. Its boss Elon Musk made it clear in December that he doesn’t think much of interfaces with other platforms: for a short time he even had accounts that had shared links to other networks such as Facebook, Instagram or Mastodon blocked.

Meanwhile, Musk had caused a stir in the past few days with the decision to limit the number of tweets that non-paying Twitter users can read each day. The billionaire justified the step by wanting to restrict tools for automatically combing through tweets.

Tweetdeck users are among those affected by the move: the user interface developed by Twitter itself for clearly organizing tweets has not worked since then.
