After the death of Nahel M., the illusory national harmony in the face of urban riots

Whenever the Republic is in danger, a burst always ends up happening to defend the essential. In a France traumatized by six days of urban riots, including five of high intensity, initiatives are multiplying to block violence and try to find commonality. Monday July 3, at the call of the Association of Mayors of France, rallies took place throughout France, bringing together elected officials from the right, the left and the majority. In the cities most affected by the damage, citizens came by the hundreds to support their representatives, after the violent attack which targeted Saturday the home of Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor Les Républicains (LR) of L’Haÿ-les- Roses (Val-de-Marne).

At the top of the state too, gestures combine to try to recreate unity. The President of the Republic spoke on Monday afternoon with the presidents of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, and of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, before receiving the city councilors of the “more than 220 municipalities victims of abuses”. For her part, the Prime Minister received Monday, at Matignon, the representatives of all the political groups in Parliament to discuss proposals.

It is not yet time to take stock, because the situation remains precarious, with another 45,000 police officers mobilized overnight from Monday July 3 to Tuesday July 4. However, one would have to be blind not to measure the trauma of those who tried to intervene to save what could still be saved, while 147 attacks on town halls, libraries and municipal buildings were recorded in a few days.

Incendiary attitudes

When questioned, elected officials on all sides rely on the strong demand for republican order from their constituents to try to bounce back. A breeding ground exists for a sudden change to take place, a common response is being developed, as has been the case in recent years, when the Republic suffered blows from the bumper. Unfortunately, we are no longer there.

At the height of the violence, two former presidential candidates stoked the fire in the hope of accentuating the fractures. On the far left, Jean-Luc Mélenchon refused “to call for calm” et cleared the thugs by explaining that « c’[était] the poor who rebel[eaient] ». His position aroused strong tensions within the Nupes, without however causing a clear and clear break.

On the far right, Eric Zemmour challenged the evidence of police negligence, which led to the death of young Nahel M., and interpreted the riots as “the prodromes of a civil war”, a « gethnic and racial war » in connection with « l’immigration ». Two symmetrically opposed positions, but two equally incendiary attitudes. For these two, the obvious is obvious: it is no longer a question of saving the Republic but of bringing it down.

While Marine Le Pen is once again placing herself in a position to recover the request for an order, the polarization of the debate is rubbing off on all those who could still make common cause. The left concentrates the fire on police violence, the right on the rioters, which the president of LR, Eric Ciotti, does not hesitate to present as “barbarians” castigating “mass immigration ».

In this context, the word “appeasement” barely pronounced seems already adulterated, and the Head of State finds himself alone to try to build a response combining firmness and justice. Because, if many forget it or do not want to see it, it is indeed a crying feeling of injustice which has led to the unleashing of violence in recent days.
