The resettlement of internally displaced persons in the territories freed from occupation in Karabakh has begun. Settlement was carried out in Agalı village of Zangilan district, Talish village of Tartar district and Lachin city. After all, there are more than 600,000 people in the status of internally displaced persons, and their expectations and needs regarding the return to their ancestral lands should, of course, be studied. Otherwise, the Azerbaijani society will face the not-so-small problems of the “Great Return”.

In order to reveal these needs and expectations, the Advisory Council on Women, Peace and Security conducted a study called “Return of internally displaced persons to Karabakh: A gender perspective on the process” and conducted a survey among 705 displaced women.

Young people are not very eager to return

It is clear from the responses of the respondents to the question “Are you thinking of returning to Karabakh” that most of the IDPs are interested in returning. 70.6 percent of the respondents said that they are thinking of returning to Karabakh. 15.1 percent of the survey participants said they did not want to return to Karabakh, and 14.3 percent said they were still undecided.

Although the majority of IDPs expressed their interest in returning to Karabakh, the analysis of respondents on various socio-demographic indicators shows that the share of those who want to return among some social groups is lower than the average indicator. For example, it is clear from the answers to the question “Do you think of returning to Karabakh” by the age groups of the respondents that 89 percent of people over 60 years of age gave a positive answer to this question, but the same indicator is 61 percent in the 18-29 age group.
