However, in an effort to enhance the overall care for epilepsy surgery patients, a group of former patients have voiced their desire for more comprehensive visual information about the entire process. These individuals believe that a better understanding of the experiences and considerations of others who have undergone the surgery would have aided their decision-making process.
Responding to this feedback, a film series has been developed to address this need. The series not only offers practical insights into the various phases of the surgery process but also features the personal experiences of three patients. By sharing these stories, patients considering epilepsy surgery can gain a deeper understanding of what to expect and make informed decisions.
Undoubtedly, the path to epilepsy surgery is an extensive and often prolonged one. The specific examinations and phases required may differ for each patient. For some, it quickly becomes apparent whether they are suitable candidates for the surgery. In other cases, however, surgical intervention may be needed to pinpoint the exact region from where the epilepsy originates.
This critical information allows medical professionals to determine whether the removal of the epileptic source would result in the loss of other essential functions, such as speech or vision. Throughout the diagnostic process, patients may need to be admitted to facilities like Kempenhaeghe or MUMC+ for several weeks. However, patients can rest assured that they will receive guidance and support from these institutions during all examinations, the surgery itself, as well as the recovery period.
In their joint efforts, Kempenhaeghe and MUMC+ have established themselves as expert centers for epilepsy care. Together, they form the Academic Center for Epileptology (ACE) and serve as a center of expertise for epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. As one of only three Dutch centers offering the option of epilepsy surgery, they are dedicated to providing specialized care to patients in need.
