The 2020 pandemic changed our lives in many aspects and one of them was the way to enjoy our vacations, those well-deserved days off, not only in summer but on bridges or simple weekends. The caravanning sector has been one of the great beneficiaries, first out of obligation (safety in coexistence during the pandemic) and now, out of satisfaction: enjoying nature, without schedules or haste and with freedom of movement.

Thus, caravanning has gone from being an unknown sector in a few years to being an object of admiration and desire when seen on our roads. Only in the last 2 years and according to data from the DGT, almost 15,000 of these vehicles have been registered, which shows the interest that the caravanning has aroused In our country.

According to data from the sector’s employers’ association, the Spanish Association of the Caravaning Industry and Commerce (Aseicar), its more than 150 associated companies have more than 75% of their rental fleet reserved for this summer. The average rental is around 7 days, which means about 50,000 rentals for these next 2 months. To these rental vehicles must be added another 170,000 owned motorhomes, campers and caravans (50% of the mobile fleet) and some 50,000 foreigners who will visit our country. In total, around 225,000 caravanning vehicles will circulate on our roads, displace some 675,000 people (3 on average per vehicle) and generate income in shops, restaurants, gas stations… of more than 230 million euros (150 euros average spending daily per vehicle and 7 days of average route).

An important deficit that the sector has in our country is precisely the lack of motorhome areas to absorb that volume of vehicles in summer. Currently in Spain there are some 1,200 authorized areas but another 1,800 would be needed to provide service to those 250,000 motorhome drivers. France alone has 7,500 areas, Germany 5,700 and Italy 4,800.

But the motorhome driver has a series of obligations to fulfill. In this way, from Aseicar it is recommended to avoid crowds in unauthorized spaces, respect the different regional and municipal regulations and, of course, the environmental environment of the areas that are visited.

Also, and to avoid unpleasantness during our vacations, he advises against renting between individuals since it is difficult to know the real state of the rented vehicle, to know the revisions carried out in addition to the fact that the insurance does not have the same coverage as it is a vehicle for private use.

For this reason, from Aseicar we recommend going to official establishments where we can compare different vehicles depending on the people who are going to travel, with little age, with their updated reviews, valid documentation and specific rental insurance.
