Meta group’s new application, called Threads, is available for pre-order since Monday July 3 on the mobile application stores for iPhone and Android. Announced in mid-March by the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, this platform, which will compete with Twitter, must be put into service from Thursday July 6.

Instagram with text

According to the presentation of the application on the Apple Store, “ Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about to the trends of tomorrow ».

Originally, the engineers had launched the idea of an instant messenger like Messenger (the messenger of the Facebook application), as early as 2019. But the description of the latest version of Threads is closer to that of Twitter.

Attached to Instagram, the new application is presented as a way to ” connect directly ” with its ” favorite designers » et « those who like the same or to build your own base to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world “. Users will be able to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram.

Interoperability

The only breaking point in how other apps work is in its interoperability, i.e. the ability to use one’s username and account for multiple apps.

The choice of interoperability envisaged by Meta also stands out from Twitter’s approach to the matter: in December, its main shareholder Elon Musk had briefly blocked the accounts of several users who shared links to other social networks, including Facebook, Instagram or Mastodon.

Competition with Twitter

The director of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, could thus benefit from the debacle of Twitter since its takeover by the American billionaire. After the obligation to pay for the certification of accounts and the limitation of the use of “Tweet deck”, Twitter has again caused strong reactions in recent days, with the restriction of the reading of tweets, to 6,000 per day for verified accounts, 600 for others and even 300 for new accounts.

The stated objective of this decision is to limit the massive use of social network data by third parties, in particular companies, thus feeding their artificial intelligence models.

Threads thus represents the new bet of Meta, while the Silicon Valley company is faced with new challenges. After its massive investment in the metaverse, which is struggling to bear fruit for the moment, the company recently carried out a large cost reduction plan, which resulted in the layoff of tens of thousands of employees since 2022.
