With more than a month in advance, it joined the list of concerts of the TerraCeo Festival that this year have signed a sold out and, next Saturday, the Mexican singer and songwriter Julieta Venegas will land in the city to thrill the public of Vigo with her new album, entitled Your story.

With a career as successful as yours, how was born that need to review the past that beats in your new album?

I am at a moment in which my records reflect something that I am thinking about, the stage of my life that I am going through. They are like small photos in which I recount different situations and, right now, I am at a point where I accept the past. I was always one of those people who, at the moment a story ends, well bye, but now I defend that everything I have experienced, what has made me feel good and what has not, is also what I am. We tend to want to forget certain things, try to erase it, but I think you have to make it part of your fabric, because it’s part of our learning.

Personal file

Julieta Venegas (California, 1970) is one of those music legends with a professional career endorsed by 46 awards including Grammys and Latin Grammys, MTV Music Awards and Spanish Music Academy Awards, among others, after debuting in 1997 with the album titled Here.

In “Tu historia” you sing about heartbreak and breakups. Is it the result of applying that philosophy?

Yes. There’s a lot of heartbreak on the record, it’s very much like dancing crying and just like that, suddenly, it goes up musically. It has many themes that are also about a love conflict, in which there are beginnings and endings, but there is also friendship. I really like telling stories that have to do with this, but in all its forms, not just about love as a couple. Love is something that sticks to people, brings us closer, and in life we need it in all its forms, from love as a couple, to our family, our children, our parents, our friends… It has a very important dimension for me.

And after so much time dedicating himself to the musicWhat encourages you to continue? Because just a few years ago he came to reconsider continuing.

I try not to think too much in terms of what I have done, but rather in terms of all that remains for me to do. I don’t see the past as a burden and I don’t even see it as an achievement, it’s a part of the process. For me, making music is a way of expressing myself, a part of who I am, and if I didn’t, that part would remain silent, so it’s a decision I made not only based on my career, but because it’s what I need. A few years ago, especially before 2019, it is true that I asked myself, I said to myself: Do I have to make another album and tour again? When the pandemic hit I couldn’t continue and then I started writing without having any objective, only because I needed to sit at the piano to compose songs and without being very clear about what or where they were going, but at that moment it didn’t seem important to me either. It was there, at that moment, when I realized that that expression was part of what I needed for my life and, from that, I began to build a record without knowing that it was a beginning. Then I started working on it and Your story was born; Music for me is a form of expression, something very mine and I cannot and do not want to silence it, nor leave it aside, because I think I need it.

Especially as a woman, I imagine it’s important to raise that voice, have you encountered any barriers because of it?

Personally, in my career I cannot say that I have encountered obstacles because I am a woman. Luckily, I have always built it the way I wanted, since I signed for the first time with a multinational. From the beginning they have known that I was not very moldable and I have been able to sustain that over time. Now, as a woman I do feel the need to connect, because we have our own symbolism. I consider myself a feminist person and precisely, on this latest album, the song Caminar sola talks about the fear that I feel as a woman when I go out at night, that I am afraid of walking alone on a dark street, because I don’t think there is a only woman, at least in Latin America, who feels safe walking down the street at three in the morning. On this subject I question how it is taken for granted that women have to feel afraid at night and I think that this must be questioned. It is a song that invites reflection and I believe that we must talk about these issues, not only among ourselves, but also with our brothers, fathers, partners or men who are close to us. We have to make them think about it.

Musically, what influences do you currently drink from? What groups or artists have surprised you lately?

Well, right now I’m very hooked on the album that Sílvia Pérez Cruz has just released, Toda la vida, un día. I find her fascinating. I’m also listening a lot to the Chilean Mala Mía, who has an incredible record. I think we are at a time when a lot of composers are emerging with influences that come from trap, but that take them to a much more experimental place and Mala Mía is a perfect example of this. Another artist I’ve been listening to a lot lately is the Argentinian León Cordero, who also has those elements of a more urban world and combines them with folklore, something very modern and very interesting, because I find it incredible how he combines music and letter. On the other hand, now I only listen to records, I’ve had enough of random music, and I’ve always been a big fan, but for me records are a story, it’s like watching a movie or completing a photograph.

And what advice would you give to all those new voices that are making their way into the music scene?

Nowadays, technologically there are many possibilities, but for me the first thing would be to learn to play an instrument, because it is something that will give you a lot of freedom when it comes to creating music, while technology will allow you to experiment and find a sound. own. Lastly, playing live, because that gives you something essential that I think all artists should experience when writing, which is contact with the public.
