Guns n’ Roses are on an extensive reunion tour around the world. But most of their concerts get brutal slating. Why? This is explained by the band’s only appearance in Germany.

What a crazy idea that is tonight. The idea that Guns n’ Roses were the biggest rock band in the world for a few years. So, the exact same band that is playing the only German concert of their world tour this Monday evening in Frankfurt’s Waldstadion. Because, honestly, if you put this band on stage as a Guns n’ Roses cover band, there would be no question that Guns n’ Roses fans would chase Guns n’ Roses off the stage. Because of blasphemy. And noise pollution. Because that’s probably the main problem tonight. the sound It’s not just bad. It’s an assault. Whoever is responsible for this, he apparently had Appetite for Destruction.

The band was often scolded on their current comeback tour. More often completely torn up. But at least you can’t blame frontman Axl Rose for not trying. He runs from stage edge to stage edge, moves his prosperous hips and shows a stamina that you would not have believed him capable of. He presents himself much more agile than his band, which is almost always programmatically lethargic. But maybe she just wants to save her strength, because they present a three-hour set that, at least on paper, leaves nothing to be desired by fans. In theory, this all sounds great. In stadium practice, however, unfortunately only after undifferentiated, completely over-leveled standard noise. The evening threatens to turn into a disaster.

But then, in the last third of the evening, the band surprisingly manages to change the course. It’s not entirely clear if the sound has been brought under control by now or if your hearing is just so irreparably damaged that you’re imagining it, but the show suddenly picks up speed when Axl Rose in the Ukraine Solidarity T- Shirt “Civil War” intoned. Up to this point, one had accepted the fact that he had simply lost a not inconsiderable part of his broad vocal spectrum somewhere between intoxication, excess and madness, but suddenly every note is spot on again. Even the high ones. The audience gratefully acknowledges this and, with plastic beer mugs raised happily, they sway to the war illustrations on stage while the sun slowly sets on the horizon.

A subsequent slash guitar solo leads to the evening’s highlight, the perfect intonation of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” which, followed by “November Rain” leads to the obligatory “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”. And who would have expected that at this late hour? The former child prodigies almost succeed in performing at least one small miracle, because the looming catastrophe grows into a brilliant, quite successful finale. And suddenly Guns n’ Roses has a whole arena at its feet again. As if they had never been away. As if it were still 1991. Despite everything. And suddenly the thought doesn’t seem so far away that this very band was once the biggest rock band on this planet. What remains? Two hours of suffering, one hour of hope and the prospect of hearing loss.
