JAKARTA – Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) encouraged each local government to prepare food storages. The granary is for the long dry season, aka El Nino, which is likely to occur this year.
The presence of food storages in each region is expected to maintain food availability, at least to meet food needs in each region. This is because El Nino has the potential to hamper agricultural productivity when crop failure occurs.
“Barns are needed for us in the face of El Nino. Each region must have a large stock. If the buffer stock is not strong, El Nino can be very dangerous,” said Syahrul when giving directions on the Discussion Forum ‘Despite El Nino, You Can Harvest’ via Perhimpi’s YouTube channel, Tuesday (4/6/2023).
Syahrul asked the local government to seriously deal with El Nino. The presence of El Nino will have an impact on reduced rainfall in the Indonesian region which will eventually trigger drought in the Indonesian region in general.
“The government’s main task is to provide food for people’s consumption. If the food condition is not good, it’s the same as our efforts will be zero. Why do we have roads and all good facilities but no food for the people,” he continued.
In addition to preparing food storages, the Minister of Agriculture also asked each region to prepare a 1,000 hectare pilot plot. This pilot land will be a locomotive for increasing the production capacity of the area.
“So that farmers and residents can see it as an example, such as water management or the use of organic fertilizers. With this land, the community can increase the production of various food commodities,” said Minister of Agriculture SYL.
“Collaboration is very important to determine the direction we will take today and tomorrow,” he concluded.
