In 2021, the WHO authorized the first childhood vaccine against malaria.

The fight against malaria has become a priority for some countries. But even despite current efforts, the serious impact it causes has not yet been reversed. In fact, since 2020 there has been a slight increase in the global incidence.

About this phenomenon, those responsible are two important factors. To begin with, the strategies were not fully applied due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also the World Health Organization (WHO) generated new algorithms and forms or strategies for their identification.

In this vein, in the past we presented you with the new guidelines proposed to achieve the eradication of malaria. Broadly speaking, they consist of a package of updated recommendations in a series of technical areas ranging from chemoprevention to mass drug administration.

On the other hand, between 2010 and 2021 approximately two thirds of the funds for malaria control and elimination were provided by countries and international donors, while the governments of endemic countries provided another third.

Data compiled by the World Health Organization and presented in its World Malaria Report 2022 show that the United States was the largest donor, accounting for 36 percent of all fund donations. The next largest donor countries were the United Kingdom (8 percent), France (4 percent), Germany (3 percent) and Japan (3 percent).

For its part, during 2021 it is estimated that there were 247 million cases of malaria in 84 endemic countries, compared to 245 million in 2020. With this, it can be seen that it is a problem of large dimensions

According to the report, while 29 countries accounted for 96% of malaria cases worldwide, only four countries, Nigeria (27%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%) and Mozambique ( 4%), accounted for almost half of all cases worldwide.

On the other hand, in recent times some progress has been made in the fight malaria. In fact, in 2021, the WHO authorized the first childhood vaccine in history against this disease.

immunization is called RTS,S/AS01 and was developed by the pharmaceutical company GSK. Within its indications it is mentioned that it works for the prevention of malaria by ‘P. falciparum’ in children living in regions with moderate to high transmission.

In addition, the manufacturing company specified that the vaccine should be administered in a four-dose schedule for proper protection against the disease. While it is indicated for babies from five months of age.
