At the end of June, the Government approved a series of measures to facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life, which basically consist of the creation of new work permits and the extension of existing ones.

Among them, the five days a year to care for a family member in the event of an accident or serious illness stands out, and the extension of the permit to register unmarried couples up to 15 calendar days.

These measures are included in a royal decree law ‘escoba’ that includes some pending issues in socio-labour matters, provided for in the draft Law on Families that could not be approved due to the call for elections, and that suppose a modification of the Statute of the workers.

paid leave

Five days for serious accident or illness: it is extended from two to five days a year, and may be used in the event of an accident or serious illness, hospitalization or surgery without hospitalization that requires rest. It is valid both for a relative of up to the second degree and for a cohabitant.

Two days for the death of the spouse, domestic partner or relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity. When this assumption requires displacement of the worker, the period will be extended by two days.

leave for hours with a maximum equivalent of four days a year for urgent family reasons. Authorizes workers to be absent from work “due to force majeure”. It is understood as such when there are urgent family reasons related to relatives or cohabitants.

For example, as explained by the Minister of Social Rights Ione Belarra after the approval of the decree, when the son “has had a bad night” and the working parent “needs to stay at home with him.” Or when parents get sick “and you have to accompany them to the doctor.”

Permit of 15 calendar days for the registration of unmarried couples, a measure that was included in the Family Law.

not paid

Leave of up to eight weeks to care for the child. At first he was going to be paid -as required by the Ministry of Social Rights directed by Ione Belarra and recommended by the Council of State-, but ultimately it will not be. This permit can be used for different situations, such as in the adaptation periods of the nurseries, or in the summer days when the schools close.
