Smet(you) on Alpecin-Deceuninck’s new sprint victory in the Tour. Lead-out Mathieu van der Poel is fined by the race jury and put back to last place in the sprinters’ group. The reason? A push to Biniam Girmay in full sprint.

For the second day in a row, Van der Poel guided Jasper Philipsen to a phenomenal stage win. Second sprint victory in a row for Alpecin-Deceuninck, although the competition jury also saw irregularities during Van der Poel’s lead-out. The Dutchman pushed forward with Philipsen in his wake, giving a push to Biniam Girmay.
Result: the Dutchman is put back by the jury from 16th to 22nd place – the last place in the sprinters group – and is fined 500 Swiss francs (about 511 euros). Van der Poel also loses 13 points in the points classification. “I had expected it”, MVDP told Vive le Vélo on Sporza that evening.
“I thought it was not too bad, Biniam Girmay too. He told me afterwards. I’m the last person to want to put anyone in danger. I also think that I am not doing much wrong with that push, but others can feel free to have a different opinion about it.
Van der Poel was not the only one who was penalized by the competition jury. Phil Bauhaus, the German sprinter of Bahrain-Victorious, was also fined and points deducted as well as a 30-second penalty in the general classification. He hindered another rider during his sprint. Bauhaus does retain his third place in the result of the stage.
