The Princess of Girona Awards resume normality upon returning to the province of Girona. It is true that they have not yet returned to the Palacio de Congresos Auditorium, where the ceremony was usually held (between 2010 and 2017), but they are close to 20 kilometers away: they will be delivered to the Hotel Camiral de Caldes de Malavella (Girona). Since 2019, the Princess of Girona Awards had left their place of origin and had moved to Barcelona due to the boycott of the independence movement. This Wednesday’s ceremony to award the five winners will take place at 7:30 p.m. and will be chaired by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

In this way, normality is prevailing in Catalonia after years marked by the fire of the “procés” and the King has long been seeking autonomy without having to suffer practically a single protest from the independence movement. The separatists are broken and without the ability to mobilize, although that does not mean that this Wednesday’s event is going to be held amid tight security measures because the threat from the radicals is still latent. Even more so taking into account that this Wednesday part of the judicial future of Carles Puigdemont will be settled in Strasbourg.

This is the 14th edition of the Princess of Girona Awards and, until 2017, they had been held in the center of Girona. However, after the circumstances of October 2017, the following year (2018) they had to be organized in the Celler de Can Roca, owned by the Roca brothers, located on the outskirts of the city. Since then, the Awards had not set foot in their home province because they moved to Barcelona: last year’s edition was held in Cornellà de Llobregat, in the Ágora Auditorium of the AGBAR Water Museum. In 2021, the event took place at the CaixaForum in Barcelona. In 2020 it had to be suspended due to the pandemic.

The 2019 edition, which was the first to be held in Barcelona, left one of the most remembered images because it marked the debut of Princess Leonor and she made an intervention with a good Catalan that amazed many in Catalonia.

The departure of the Auditorium of the Girona Conference Center occurred in 2018 due to the boycott of the pro-independence mayor of JxCat Marta Madrenas, related to Carles Puigdemont. The truth is that, during the previous years, Puigdemont had been mayor of Girona and had been very welcoming to the ceremony, born in 2010. The waters are beginning to return to their course in Catalonia, with secessionism at a minimum, although in Girona The most radical independence movement continues to govern: after the last municipal elections, the PSC won, but the rod of command is in the hands of the CUP after a government agreement with JxCat and ERC.

In any case, the Awards have a great impact due to their prestige and the fields they promote: research, artistic creativity, innovation, solidarity and the entrepreneurial talent of young people up to 35 years of age “who, with their work, effort and dedication want to improve the world from different areas. Specifically, this year, the awards recognize this year the violinist María Dueñas; the engineer and founder CEO of Open Cosmos, Rafael Jordá; to the Doctor in Biomedicine and professor at Yale, Marc Schneeberger Pané; to the art therapist and founder of the Palliative Art Foundation, Silvia Fernández Cadevall and to the CEO and co-founder of the Kidogo childcare network, Sabrina Habib. «Five young talents who, from different fields, work to solve some of the great current challenges such as climate change, emotional well-being, the prevention of obesity, the need to promote music as a universal language or the promotion of equality of opportunities”, the Foundation states in a statement.

The truth is that, this 2023, Princess Leonor has an intense calendar ahead of her because on October 31 she will come of age and, two months before (August 17), she will enter the Military Academy of Zaragoza to begin her military training. , which will last for the next three years.
