Nobody wants to make a link between the riots and the death of a 27-year-old man, on the night of Saturday July 1 to Sunday July 2, in Marseille. But it is indeed the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) that the Marseille public prosecutor’s office seized after having opened a judicial investigation for “fatal blows with the use or threat of a weapon”. L’information, revealed Tuesday, July 4 by the daily The Marseillaise and confirmed by France 3 Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, is sensitive. It could ignite again a city which, for three nights, from Thursday June 29, experienced riots of an unprecedented scale, with the degradation or looting of several hundred businesses.

In its communication, the Marseille prosecutor’s office displays great caution. This trauma resulted in cardiac arrest. The place where the victim was taken care of was not revealed by the prosecutor’s office, which nevertheless specifies that “rioting and looting type events were taking place that night in the area “. The prosecution ensures that it is not able “to determine if the victim had participated or even if he had been able to circulate” in an area where his violence took place.

Saturday July 1, like many other cities in France, the city center of Marseille was under siege, crisscrossed by groups of young people, including many minors, harassing the police and organizing to loot shops or tobacconists. Several attacks against shopping malls or car dealerships also took place in other more outlying neighborhoods.

Armored vehicles and helicopters

That evening, the police headquarters had considerably reinforced its system, which, the day before, had proved ineffective in preventing the ransacking of several dozen businesses. CRS units had been placed on the Cours Belsunce and Saint-Louis (1st arrondissement) to prevent access to the main shopping streets.

Two armored vehicles and two helicopters from the gendarmerie were also mobilized, as well as personnel from the RAID and the GIGN. Traders had also recruited teams of security guards to ensure the protection of their premises. Some of these security guards also sported defense weapons of the type “gum cogne”.
