The police of the dictatorial regime of Daniel Ortega, in Nicaragua, invaded the house of the Sisters of the Poor of Jesus Christ, in León, and arrested four Brazilian nuns. The detention of the nuns took place on Sunday 2.
The whereabouts of the nuns remained unknown for hours, but they are now safe. The sisters had been in the country for seven years and were part of the Fraternity of the Poor of Jesus Christ, which is part of the Fraternity The Waymade up of consecrated persons, priests and lay people, founded in 2001.

According to information from the Congregation, the four sisters were deported because the Sandinista dictatorship had not renewed their residence permit. The community will continue the apostolate in El Salvador.

Ortega’s anticlerical and dictatorial stance is nothing new. Persecution against the Catholic Church began in the 1980s, during the Sandinista revolution, but after the April 2018 protests in Nicaragua, there was a turning point in relations between the government and the Catholic faithful.
