It is now commonplace, it has been repeatedly pointed out by international, European, judicial and legal bodies, that Justice, our judicial system has been plagued for years by heaps of problems. Its causes, unfortunately, have a direct and unfavorable reflection in most areas of social and economic life.

Recently, in fact, the operation of the judicial system is a basic prerequisite for the flow of money from the Recovery Fund, giving the problematic consequences of its pathogenesis more unfavorable dimensions.

The government has announced, the Prime Minister himself with urgency and many times, a series of changes in order for the Judiciary to get rid of the burdens that keep it stagnant and anachronistic in order to be able to fulfill its heavy institutional role, contributing to social peace, development of the country and the stimulation of the economic activity of the citizens.

In the new government term that has just begun, it is no coincidence that the changes in the Judiciary figure very high on the agenda of the prime minister’s aspirations, while the placement of the new political leadership of the ministry, led by Giorgos Floridis, promises results in an extremely difficult field.

Justice is perhaps the most complex bet of the new government, as its problems are multifactorial, chronic and require solutions that are not limited to legislative changes. Laws alone are not enough. This has been proven dozens of times in the past. It is no coincidence that all the Ministers of Justice from 1995 to today, with zero exception, passed laws to speed up justice, without however solving this basic problem, which causes heaps of consequences to the detriment of citizens, the economy and investments.

The exercise of government policy in the field of Justice has peculiar particularities, related to the fact that the political leadership of the competent ministry does not have an administrative structure to handle. It is politicized with judicial independence as a given and, moreover, with the difficulties created in the exercise of any policy by the enormous hyperinflation of the legal profession.

Any changes that have been announced – and it is necessary to implement them immediately – certainly require solid political will, getting rid of the concept of political cost and focusing only on the interests of the many and the country. Because the citizens, the freelancers, the entrepreneurs, all of us, now have the claim to get a decision from the courts in a reasonable time and that the cases do not drag from postponement to postponement and from trial to trial. The problems of Justice are neither simple nor easy. The opposite. But the expectations are high and the demands of the times self-evident…
