The purpose of the informative study is to analyze and determine the optimal solution for a temporary rail connection, in the area of Castejn, of the Castejn-Comarca de Pamplona high-speed line, currently in very advanced works on its platform, with the conventional rail line. in service Casetas-Bilbao.
The connection provides for a single track route in Iberian gauge, whose beginning is located on the conventional Casetas-Bilbao line, in the municipality of Tudela, in the alignment prior to arrival at the Castejn station, and its end is It corresponds to the southern abutment of the crossing viaduct over the Ebro River, belonging to the Castejn-Pamplona high-speed section.
In the informative study, two layout alternatives, very similar in terms of their scope and functionality, are analyzed in detail. The so-called alternative 0, 5 kilometers long, must cross the Valdelafuente ravine by viaduct, which is part of the Special Conservation Area of the Ebro River and tributaries. Also, in this alternative, the existing railway line Casetas-Bilbao is crossed by viaduct to link up with the high-speed section Castejn-Pamplona.

Alternative 1, 3 kilometers long, originates from a point closer to the Castejn station, after passing the area around the Ebro River and tributaries Special Conservation Area, so it avoids impacting these spaces. of the Natura 2000 Network. From the analysis carried out, it is determined that alternative 1 defines a more efficient infrastructure, limiting its size to what is strictly necessary without affecting protected natural spaces, so it better meets the objectives pursued and, therefore, it is the alternative that is proposed in informative study.
The informative study also proposes the temporary implementation of the Iberian gauge in the Castejn-Comarca de Pamplona (Campanas) section, in order to provide a continuous itinerary between the gauge changer of Plasencia de Jaln and Pamplona, in order to obtain the best of the possible travel times in this situation.
The Iberian gauge on the Castejn-Comarca de Pamplona (Campanas) section will be maintained until the new Zaragoza-Castejn high-speed line is completed, at which time it must be migrated to the standard gauge in accordance with the solution approved in the original reporting study.
