More of 130.000 personas Nineteen districts and counties have been affected by heavy rains and landslides in the Chinese city of Chongqing, and there are at least 15 dead and four missing, according to a preliminary toll of victims released Wednesday by local authorities.

The storm has caused damage to more than 7,500 hectares of crops and the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, has ordered the immediate dispatch of help. It has also called for greater efforts to protect lives and property from severe flooding, as the country’s scientists warned that July could bring other natural disasters due to the Extreme weather.

Heavy rains have also forced the authorities to evacuate about 10,000 people in recent days from their homes in the central province of Hunan, where dozens of buildings collapsed and initial estimates of damage reached nearly 600 million yuan (76 million euros).

China regularly faces severe flooding, and as global warming brings more frequent extreme weather events, it is likely that problems intensify. China’s rapid urbanization, coupled with the global climate crisis, means that even large cities are at risk of flooding from sudden rises in water. Chinese meteorological authorities warned that the country can expect “multiple natural disasters in July, including floods, typhoons, and high temperatures.”
