In the first half of 2023, 401,566 new passenger cars were sold in Russia, according to Avtostat data and the electronic PTS system. This is 14% more than in January-June 2022.

The largest contribution to this indicator was made byAvtoVAZ» – sales of Lada for the reporting period increased by 84% to 134,551 cars. The market share of the company in the first half of the year amounted to 33.5% against 20.8% a year earlier. According to AvtoVAZ’s own data, sales almost doubled in the first half of the year, amounting to 143,618 Lada cars.

This is followed by the big three Chinese brands, follows from the statistics of Avtostat. Chery’s sales for the first half of the year grew 3.7 times to 47,176 vehicles, Haval – three times to 38,551 cars, Geely – almost four times to 32,681 units. The Korean Kia came in fifth with 18,482 sold vehicles (-59%).

In June 2023, 82,407 passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 2.5 times more than in June 2022, analysts calculated. Almost 29% of the market last month was accounted for by Lada, 12.2% by Chery, 10% by Haval, and 8.4% by Geely. The rest of the brands were significantly lower than this mark, although the fifth and sixth places in the brand top sales were also occupied by Chinese players – Changan and Omoda.

It is noteworthy that due to the ultra-low base of last year and the opportunity to bring a car through parallel imports, Korean Kia and Hyundaias well as Japanese Toyota. The latter even increased sales by 2.3 times – however, only up to 2374 cars.

In general, brands from China are increasingly occupying the top of the sales ranking – both in terms of brands and models. Now they occupy 6 out of 10 positions in both categories. However, they are still far from the absolute leader in sales – the domestic Lada Granta. In June, 15,876 of these cars were sold – 4.7 times more in annual terms. For comparison, the nearest Chinese Haval Jolion sold 4,734 cars (an increase of 5.7 times year on year).

June 2022, along with May, was one of the worst months in terms of car sales on record. In total, in June last year, Russians bought 32,731 new cars, 77% less in annual terms, follows from Avtostat data.

According to auto expert Vladimir Bespalov, the question of what the offer will be remains, as there are not enough cars, prices are high, and buyers are in no hurry to buy them at such prices. If the availability of relatively inexpensive cars in the range of 1-2 million rubles. will be provided, then the market by the end of the year may approach 1 million cars, the expert believes. “An updated Lada Vesta has appeared, Avtotor is actively launching the production of Chinese cars, sales of Moskvich are growing. In addition, it remains possible to bring a car for parallel import. All this should contribute to the recovery of the market,” he hopes.

The baseline forecast of Avtostat for 2023 assumes that the market will reach the level of 815,000 new cars (+30%), the optimistic forecast is 850,000 (+36%).
