The satellite or independent teams of the Motorcycle World Championship have guaranteed part of their budgetary and technical stability. As reported Speedweek, the current teams signed five-year agreements with the championship promoter, Dorna Sports SL. That is to say, the Gresini, Mooney VR46, Tech3, LCR, Pramac and RNF.

Since then there have been a few changes.; Rossi took over the two places in the Esponsorama Avintia Ducati for 2022, while the RNF changed Yamaha to Aprilia for 2023, in addition to the departure of WithU and the new shareholder CryptoDATA.

These contracts have a duration of five years, and thanks to them, Dorna provides them with some technical stability until the end of 2026. Among the details of the firm, which are now coming to light, are some issues such as that Dorna bears the cost of standard tires and the ECU.

In return, for example, the teams had to agree to run a maximum of 22 Grands Prix instead of 20. They also got rid of the winter tests that do not generate money. They also negotiated to increase the payment for extra money for the 21st and 22nd Grand Prix, in the event that they were held.

Since the contract now allows a maximum of 22 GP, the subsidies for the satellite teams have grown to around 7 million euros per year. They also subsidized MotoGP client teams with two riders until the end of 2021, with subsidies that reached 6.5 million euros, including IRTA association payments such as registration fees, expenses, bonuses…

In other words, if a MotoGP factory supplies a client team with a fee of 2.2 million, Dorna will reward the factory with an additional million for each bike, although these amounts only apply to a single team. For example, Ducati has three, but only receives subsidies for one, the Pramac.

Besides, Dorna does not make distinctions by winner, as it does in Formula 1, for example, where preference is given to winning teams. In F1, more than 950 million euros are distributed among the 10 teams of two drivers.

A MotoGP each factory that does not have a customer team receives 500,000 euroslike Yamaha, or KTM in 2017 and 2018. Since Tech3 changed in 2019, KTM has another two million euros per year thanks to GASGAS.

In summary, Dorna is distributing almost 70 million euros to factories and teams between the three categories, money that comes from the sale of television rights. In F1, by comparison, around $950m is paid out to teams every year, as the contracts are vastly higher.

From 2022 to 2026 the aid to Moto2 and Moto3 teams also improved, since the economic amounts were almost frozen. They subsidize the switchboards and motors, and teams are only charged €20,000 per rider per year for Triumph’s three-cylinder engines.

Likewise, IRTA and Dorna pay for the Moto3 engine packages, with a price of 60,000 euros per pilot (with a maximum of 6 engines per pilot and season).
