In 2022 there were just over 44,000 ENARM applicants but only just over 18,000 were accepted.
To date, 60% of those interested in continuing with their professional training have not succeeded.
A recently graduated general practitioner published a video in which he explains all the reasons why it is no longer worth pursuing a specialty.

To become a general practitioner requires overcoming a long and extensive path. Although unlike other races here it is possible to extend the training in different ways. The objective is not only to have better preparation to care for patients, but also to be able to access better options.

In this sense, the most common alternative for all doctors who complete their degree is to study a specialty. But it is not enough to have the disposition, but first it is necessary to find a place. For this to be possible, you must first prove the National Examination of Applicants for Medical Residences (ENARM).

What does it consist of?

In summary, it is an objective and agreed instrument for measuring knowledge in the context of the practice of general medicine, which constitutes the first stage of the process to enter the National System of Medical Residences (SNRM).

The ENARM is developed through audited and notarially certified processes in all its phases, it has a comprehensive security system that guarantees the quality, security and confidentiality of the process.

It works to select the Mexican and foreign doctors and general practitioners who aspire to do a medical residency through a specialty university course.

On the other hand, beyond the opinion that doctors have about ENARM, the biggest problem is that there are very few places. In the 2022 edition there were just over 44,000 applicants but only just over 18,000 were accepted. With this in mind, only 40 percent achieved their goal of obtaining a position.

General practitioner does not want to be a specialist

Now, although there are thousands of general doctors who aspire to become specialists, you cannot generalize. Especially among the younger generations there are different opinions.

As an example, one can mention Dr Carlos Danielwho through a video explained the reasons why he is disappointed and has never been in his plans to pursue a specialty.

In his case, he has already completed the Bachelor of Medicine and currently He works as a general practitioner in an office attached to pharmacies. The first thing he explains is that it is not worth all the sacrifice of a residence because it is a long-term plan and that it does not guarantee professional success.

It also indicates that the new generations will not have a pension, so even at an advanced age he will have to work. He also mentions that for any specialty, not only must the ENARM be approved, but also dedicate at least three or four years of training and sometimes exploitation within a hospital.

On the other hand, the doctor affirms that his plans for improvement are others. Currently his main priority is to save all the money he earns because in the short term he wants to open a laser hair removal business because it generates income and he does not need to work it.

According to his plans, the business would be run by someone else so that it becomes passive income. In this way he can continue his activity as a general practitioner and increase the monthly money he receives.

For all of the above, do you consider that it is still worth studying a medical specialty today?
