The plane ride between Paris and New York takes eight to nine hours. A Swiss start-up is not satisfied with this and has an ambitious challenge: to reduce the flight time to an hour and a half using a hydrogen-powered hypersonic jet.

The last aircraft to achieve a similar feat was the Concorde. The model crossed the Atlantic Ocean in record time: around 3.5 hours, flying at a speed of over 2,100 km/h.

However, the company Destinus wants to overcome this time. The company intends to develop the first commercial aircraft powered by hydrogen, which can travel at five times the speed of sound and at altitudes of more than 33 km.

The company has already been testing prototypes for two years. The second prototype, Eiger, passed the tests at the end of 2022. However, the company warns that the model must be different from the final product, because of the advanced propulsion technology. with Destinus, there are several versions of engines, all powered and cooled by hydrogen. In addition to the tests, the company received investments in the European Union and is turning to research on hydrogen solutions for aeronautical mobility. Hydrogen

The expectation over hydrogen is great. Many believe that this will be the energy of the future, due to its sustainable potential (combustion is made from heat and water).

The priority, however, is passenger safety.

We’re trying to do what’s best, which is to transport people safely on hydrogen, with no emissions, hypersonic. That’s the whole world in four hours.

Opportunities

If the technology materializes, either with Destinus or another faster company, we could shorten trips around the world. Traveling from Europe to Australia takes about 20 hours, but with the Swiss jet, it could only take 4 hours and 15 minutes. With the investments, Destinus will also develop testing facilities for hydrogen engines to remain at the forefront of the aeronautical sector.
