Currently, it is estimated that 7 out of 10 Mexican adults have some degree of excess weight.
A study showed that the use of an ingestible gastric balloon together with changes in eating habits achieve a weight reduction of more than 20% in people with morbid obesity.
The results of the study were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in Las Vegas, United States.

A new study presented by Allurion showed that patients who used the swallowable gastric balloon and had a Body Mass Index of 40 or more (BMI <40), a condition considered very severe or morbid obesity[i], they lost up to 20.5% of their total body weight. Most importantly, before these results could only be achieved with surgical procedures.

Study Results

The results of the investigation were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in Las Vegas, United States. In total, the data of 232 people treated with the Allurion program (consisting of the use of the ingestible gastric balloon and changes in eating and lifestyle habits) were analyzed and revealed that the subgroup of patients with a BMI of 40 or more achieved an average reduction weight of 20.5% during the first 6 months.

He Dr. Yannis Raftopoulos, responsible for the study and Director of the Weight Control Program at the Holyoke Medical Center, commented that although the efficacy data of the Allurion Program have been demonstrated in people with overweight and moderate obesity. Although it is very important to have conclusive data on its impact on people with a severe BMI.

“The results of this study show a mean weight reduction of 20.5% after 6 months in patients with a BMI of 40 or more – levels difficult to achieve without surgery – and a mean reduction of 17.7% in the BMI<40 subgroup" .

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a person is morbidly obese when their Body Mass Index is 40 or more. This extreme condition is associated with the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory failure, osteoarticular problems and some types of cancer.

“Currently only 1% of patients who qualify for bariatric surgery actually get it, reflecting a significant, hitherto unmet need for less invasive and safer interventions with similar efficacy. These results demonstrate that the program can potentially serve as a solution for patients who are eligible for bariatric surgery but prefer a less invasive alternative such as the swallowable gastric balloon,” said Allurion Founder and CEO Dr. Shantanu Gaur.

According to the World Obesity Federation There are more than 1 billion people on the planet with obesity and it is estimated that by 2035 it will almost double, with an estimated growth of 1.9 billion people. This means that one in four people in the world will live with obesity.
