South Korea has announced that the spy satellite launched by North Korea in May, which fell into the sea shortly after take-off, “was of no military use”. The wreckage was recovered by Seoul, which analyzed the material.

Pyongyang tried to put the country’s first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit, but the rocket carrying it exploded just minutes after liftoff.

For 36 days, maritime rescue ships, mine detection devices and teams of divers from Seoul worked to recover the wreckage of the artifact, which was analyzed by South Korean and American specialists, according to the Ministry of Defense.

“They assessed that it had no military use as a reconnaissance satellite,” the statement said.

North Korea says the satellite was needed to counter the growing US military presence in the region. Pyongyang has reinforced that it intends to launch another satellite soon, a technology that dictator Kim Jong-un considers a priority.

The United States, South Korea and Japan condemned the launch as a violation of UN resolutions banning the communist country from developing ballistic missile technology.

Experts claim that these rockets and space launchers share the same technology.
