New Monegasque coach, replacing Philippe Clément, the 53-year-old Austrian reveals why his name is so.

Adolf Hütter, officially appointed coach of AS Monaco on Tuesday, is a man born in 1970 in Hohenems, Austria. Former Austrian international, the player who became a coach will always carry a weight on his shoulders: having the first name of the German dictator, founder of Nazism. How could his parents have named their child, although born 25 years after the reign of the “Führer”?
In tribute to his uncle
During an interview for Hit Radio FFH in 2018, he tells the story of his first name: “My parents wanted to call me something else. But my father’s brother died at 27 in an avalanche and my grandmother, who was also my godmother, insisted that he remain an Adolf in the family. […]. Finally, my parents let themselves be convinced. »
His mother, who did not really appreciate this first name, called him, all his childhood, by his nickname: “Obviously, I would have liked another first name”, he confided. “But my mother always called me ‘Adi’ and everyone has called me that ever since. Only one of his friends was allowed to use the first name Adolf to solicit him. However, it is not forbidden to call your son Adolf, in Austria, Germany or France.

A difficult name
Throughout his career, the Austrian tactician kept hearing comparisons about his name. “You can’t be totally happy with a name like that even if you don’t realize it when you’re a child,” he reveals. “But growing up, there were always connections that were made between my name and the past. »
“Adi” will soon have the opportunity to make his name known in France, since he was hired on Tuesday by Monaco to succeed the Belgian Philippe Clément. The former coach passed by RB Salzburg (2014-2015) arrives from the German championship where he made the glory of Eintracht Frankfurt (2018-2021) or Borussia Mönchengladbach (2021-2022).
In the Principalitythe Austrian will not have the opportunity to have under his tutelage the young Willem Geubbels (21 years old), who left ASM last January and whose proximity to his name (which is pronounced “jeubbels”) with one of the most influential leaders of the Nazi regime, Joseph Goebbels, provoked a series of reactions.
