What makes one coffee more sustainable than another? Why are organic varieties important? What role does sustainability play in the coffee creation process? What are the benefits it brings to the planet?

Together with Laura González, head of Nutrition, Health and Well-being at Nestlé Spain, we answer these and many other questions in the new episode of “Sustainable Food”.

The coffee that watches over the health of the planet

“Each coffee is a different world to discover,” explains nutritionist Laura González.

There are those who prefer to drink it soluble, while others, on the other hand, enjoy the experience of preparing the coffee itself. The coffee in machines, the Italian coffee maker… there are many different ways to drink this drink that is among the favorites of the majority of the population.

“Many bet on the convenience of coffee in capsules, but it should always go hand in hand with sustainability since capsules can and should be recycled because there are thousands of collection points that guarantee that the recycling process is carried out” explains the Nestle expert.

A thousand ways to prepare a coffee

There are many varieties of coffee: robusta, arabica, pure coffees, roasted… even the coffee maker we use will give each coffee a different nuance.

“We must choose the variety of coffee that best suits our palate, but without losing sight of sustainability,” adds the expert.

Choosing the best sustainable coffee

“We can all be more or less interested, but those people with a special sensitivity towards their food and the nature that surrounds us are usually the most faithful followers,” explains Laura González.

An example of ecological and sustainable coffee is that of Bunka. The specialist points out that for the elaboration of this coffee, intercrops to protect ecosystems, that is, two or more different crops are combined on the same plot and at the same time. In the café, Laura González explains that she is interspersed with black pepper trees.

“When all the care is taken in the cultivation and production process of the beans, the coffee ends up having better properties”, clarifies the nutritionist.

“The ideal is to choose that coffee in which sustainability is a priority and also guarantees it,” he concludes.

NESCAFÉ Plan 2030

This initiative, proposed by Nestlé, is an integrative strategy that promotes use of regenerative agriculture aimed at curbing climate change.

“The objective of this plan is to reduce greenhouse gases, to increase the income of coffee growers and to improve the social conditions of the agricultural environment”, clarifies the specialist of Nestlé.

The idea is promote the optimization of fertilizers, the farm adaptation, promote crops that improve the health of the soil and improve the biodiversity of vegetation.

How can we ensure that the coffee we buy is sustainable?

“The organic certification ensures that no chemicals or pesticides have been used during the cultivation process”, explains Laura González.

In the labeling of the coffee product we can find a logo that assures us the origin and treatment of coffee.

“The most common is a stamp of the European Union. It is a green square with a leaf formed with small white stars”, he points out.

Caffeine at a nutritional level

Caffeine is a stimulant found naturally in coffee.

According to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), coffee constitutes the most important source of caffeine among adults and represents between 40% and 94% of total intake.

Among its main effects are the improvement of performance when we practice sports or a greater ability to stay alert, among many other benefits.
