The Algeciras Bay Port Authority (spain) has advanced in the electrification of the Port of Tarifa by closing an agreement with Ghenova Ingeniería to provide technical assistance in the development of OnShore Power Supply (OPS) technology.

OPS technology allows the fleet to turn off their engines and connect to the electrical grid during the time they remain in the dock, reducing emissions, noise and vibrations. Other Spanish ports such as Valencia or Barcelona already have similar projects underway.

This initiative, financed by European funds from the NextGenerationEU Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, aims to promote sustainability and energy efficiency in the port.

Among the tasks agreed in the contract, Ghenova Ingeniería will be in charge of carrying out a feasibility study, drafting projects and execution specifications, designing a business model and carrying out the tender for the implementation of the OPS facilities.

These facilities will be located in berth one of the Sagrado Corazón dock, in addition to berths two and three of the passenger terminal and in the berths of the fishing quays of the Tarifa port facility. The total budget for these actions is 1.7 million euros, of which 83,000 euros correspond to the technical assistance awarded.

The connection of the ships to the electrical supply network in the port, through OPS technology, will make it possible for the combustion engines to stop working while they are docked. This small gesture will favor the reduction of polluting emissions, as well as the levels of noise and vibrations generated by ships in the port.
