Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (TEMHJ) is a musical about identity, resilience and respect; about meeting, loving and recognizing each other above social prejudices. The musical written by Tom MacRae and composer Dan Gillespie Sells, based on the idea by Jonathan Butterell, inspired by the BBC documentary Jamie: Drag queen at 16 (2011) directed by Jenny Popplewell.

It is based on the true-life story of British student Jamie Campbell, AKA Jamie New, as she overcomes bullying, rejection and bullying to break out of the darkness, follow her dream and become a drag queen in her teens.

The story is set in the contemporary world, in the working-class neighborhood of Parson Cross, in Sheffield, England.. In the words of its authors: “TEMHJ is set in a world where kids don’t go to the theater and almost certainly have never seen a musical. They’re loud and real and gritty.”

Everybody’s talking about Jamie opened on 13 February 2017 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield, directed by Jonathan Butterell; and in November of that same year, it was transferred to the Apollo Theatre, in London’s West End. In July 2018, a show was broadcast live throughout the UK and Commonwealth countries. On 17 September 2021, a film adaptation, also directed by Butterell, was released, receiving a BAFTA nomination for Best Film..

The original London production was nominated for five Olivier Awards in 2018, including Best Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music for its composer, who debuted with this title in music for the stage; It also won two WhatsOnStage Awards: in 2018 for Best New Musical and in 2019 for Best West End Show. Currently, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is presented in more than seven countries and its film version can be enjoyed on various streaming platforms.
