Frame by Frame, a well-known Italian post-production and visual effects studio, has unveiled for the first time to the press the spaces of Casa Frame, the recently renovated main office in the heart of the Prati district in Rome. Here every day the visual effects and post-production of films and documentaries for the cinema, Italian and international TV series are born, together with communication and advertising campaigns. During the tour, the founders Davide Luchetti and Lorenzo Foschi talked about the different souls of the two buildings, which house the unscripted post-production department and the department dedicated to visual effects, with over 100 new workstations, classrooms, a laboratory creative, recreational and receptive spaces for staff and customers, a green facade and a vertical vegetable garden with a view of St. Peter’s Dome. An opportunity to also take stock of future projects and job and professional growth opportunities for young people who want to pursue a career in an innovative and booming sector. (VIDEO)

“Frame by Frame – said Luchetti – as in the tradition of great start-ups, was born from a garage, or rather even earlier in my bedroom where together with my friends we dreamed of what to do in the world of cinema and how to innovate it. After watching dozens of films from the 70s we dreamed of science fiction and visual effects. We took it from there, then moved into a garage of a small computer graphics startup in the 80s. We have gradually built up our company, born in the early 90s. At the beginning we dealt with television, specifically real-time graphics, therefore with a technological innovation that was already important for the time. After that we approached the world of post-production, first for television and then for cinema up to special effects in the last 10 years”.

Among the most recent works made for the big screen by Frame by Frame are Siccità by Paolo Virzì, where the studio was awarded at the latest David di Donatello in the category ‘Best Visual Effects’, Bones and all and Challengers by Luca Guadagnino, and forthcoming Confidence by Daniele Luchetti. Among the TV series, the company created the visual effects of the second episode of House of the Dragon, Boris, My Brilliant Friend and the first season of A casa tutti bene – The series, just to name a few. Work is underway on the visual effects of The Equalizer 3 – Without truce with Denzel Washington and The Queer by Luca Guadagnino whose shooting began in April in the Cinecittà studios.

Furthermore, in the last year, Frame by Frame has established multiple international collaborations with Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO, Sony Pictures, Disney, MGM and 20th Century Studios. Also in the last two years, Frame has invested around 4 million euros in Research and Development in order to enhance its production and commercial capacity and thus intercept the evolution of the film and serial market, in particular for the creation of visual effects, with a focus towards an international context. It has therefore invested in skills, methodologies, technologies to achieve a production capacity such as to represent a point of reference also for the most significant international productions.

Regarding the company’s numerous collaborations, Luchetti specified: “In the last 4 years, the Italian and international market has had a great explosion thanks to platforms and the evolution of distribution. Frame by Frame has had a great leap in turnover, quality of work and personnel. We found ourselves facing large investments to be a leader in a market in great turmoil”.

The spaces of Casa Frame have been conceived and designed to give collaborators, clients and artists the opportunity to live and work in a comfortable, inclusive and inspiring place. To enrich the headquarters, a 25-seat cinema room to allow a preview of the projects carried out and the so-called “artist’s residence”, the flagship of Casa Frame, an apartment located on the fifth floor designed to welcome and make the stay of resident artists and guests is comfortable. Among period objects and designer furnishings, the new Frame headquarters also houses, along the staircase that connects the first to the second floor of the main building, the historic paddle-operated remote indicator of arrivals and departures of Linate airport dating back to the 1990s (its twin is exhibited at the MoMA in New York).

All locations and related businesses are certified to TPN technology and security standards required by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Close to the main office, still in the Prati district, there are two other offices dedicated to cinema post-production that Frame is renovating to double the production capacity of the department, with the enhancement of technologies and spaces for color correction and management data, 4 new multifunction broadcast rooms and innovative online storage and management systems for digital material.

“Frame by Frame has always been a creative driven company – specified Luchetti – For us, creativity is important and must be present in everything we do. Ours is a company founded by 18 year olds who needed to play and we still feel this need. For this reason we have created a very pleasant and interactive environment where we play and create. In our courtyard, for example, we have created installations, there are common areas where we collaborate, we also have a laboratory where objects can be produced. There is also a gym and a kitchen where we do pastry-making courses, where we eat together and try to do activities parallel to our work”.

Combining over 30 years of experience in post-production and visual effects with the most innovative and pioneering technologies, Frame by Frame has also developed a series of cutting-edge courses dedicated to the next generation of visual effects artists. The training programs are tailor-made to offer an immediate outlet into the world of work through the learning of creative dynamics, technical and organizational skills directly from the professionals and experts in the sector at the Frame Studios. School of Frame represents an ideal starting point and an opportunity to allow young enthusiasts and students to acquire the experience and skills necessary to embark on a career in post-production and visual effects, a rapidly growing sector that is increasingly struggling to find new profiles. To date, the campus has trained over 50 new talents and the recorded occupancy rate is 90%.
