In recent times, the conversation about the antimicrobials due to the direct impact they have on health. Emphasis is directly placed on its correct use in humans, but what happens in animal production is seldom discussed. In the end it is a problem that has a rather deep origin and is worth looking into.

For a start, An antimicrobial is an agent that kills microorganisms or stops their growth. Within this group of medications there are several types, although the ones that cause the most concern are the antibiotics and antifungals.

Consequences of unjustified abuse

All part of the fact of misuse that has been made for decades. When used correctly and with the indication of a health professional, they are perfect for fighting infections. Although when they are consumed on their own initiative the call is generated antimicrobial resistance.

To put it into perspective, this phenomenon is directly responsible for at least 1.27 million deaths per year today. Although the most serious thing is that if the trend continues, the figure will be 10 million in 2050.

Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently published its first global research agenda for scientists to address the most pressing human health priorities to combat antimicrobial resistance.

The document contains 40 research topics on bacteria, fungi and Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to drugs that must be answered by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Countries that dominate the use of antimicrobials in animal production

With this in mind, a rather serious problem that has increased in recent years is the self medication. Although it is not the only one because it has also become common for producers to use different drugs for animal husbandry.

In fact, global use of antimicrobials for cattle, sheep, poultry, and swine is expected to increase from 99,502 tons in 2020 to 107,472 tons in 2030, an 8 percent increase.

Antimicrobials are used to keep livestock healthy, but experts warn that overuse has led to increasingly resistant infections not only in animals but also in humans. In fact, some consequences can already be seen with the emergence of super bacteria.

From the above, Statista revealed the ten largest markets for the use of antimicrobials in animal production. The first place and undisputed leader is China with more than 30 thousand tons registered in 2020 and the trend continues to increase.

The following positions within the same analysis are Brazil (10,007.1 tons), India (5,747.7 tons), the United States (5,234.2 tons) and Australia (3,609.5 tons), although they are expected to maintain their high positions in the 2030.

For its part, Mexico ranks eighth worldwide. During 2020 it registered around 3,500 tons and it is expected that by 2030 there will be an increase of 13.2 percent.
