They will talk to each other again. According to information from BFM TV which was confirmed to Le Parisien, the government and the inter-union formed during the opposition to the pension reform will speak to each other directly.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12. It will take place at 10 a.m., in Matignon, where the offices of the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, are located. The invitation was sent by mail this Thursday morning.

This meeting will also be an opportunity for trade union leaders and the government to discuss more generally. The executive power is looking for social dialogue in the perspective of its text on work.

Separate meetings in mid-May

At the beginning of April, the leaders of the trade union centers had been received at Matignon in full mobilization against the pension reform. The meeting came after three months of demonstrations and various strikes. The trade unionists had deemed this period too long to resume discussions between the parties. After an hour, the unions had left the table, noting the refusal to withdraw the text.

In mid-May, Elisabeth Borne once again received the unions. This time, no specific agenda had been set in order to broaden the discussions. The meetings were spread over two days, plant by plant.

Since then, the pension reform has not only passed through parliament, but also through legal remedies. The unions did not call for a new mobilization after the June 6 mobilization day. The Pensions Orientation Council (COR), for its part, considers that, despite the adoption of the reform which notably pushes back the retirement age from 62 to 64, the system will remain “sustainably” in deficit.

A study published in mid-June showed that France, at the end of 2021, had almost 17 million retirees. They received an average pension of 1366 euros net per month.
