The hailstorm that has swept Aragon from east to west and little by little the numerous damages that the hailstone has left. The urban centers and agricultural areas of Bajo Aragón, Calatayud or Cariñena are some of the most affected, according to the councilors themselves. The hail has destroyed the roofs of warehouses and houses, windows, car windows in the center of the municipalities, but the economic blow looms in the fields. The peach, pear, apple or grape harvest was in many areas at the point of caramel.

In Alcañiz, the downpour began at 5:30 p.m., discharging water with great force for at least half an hour. And the worst thing is the panorama that it has left in the fields that surround the town: “100% of the peach harvest has been lost and there are many families that live from it. There is nothing left on the trees. Not the leaves. Only the trunks have remained standing. A disaster”, explains the mayor of the municipality, Miguel Ángel Estevan.

Significant damage has also occurred in the urban area of Alcañiz. Tiles have fallen, streets have had to be cut due to accumulated water and even a wall has collapsed, which has forced an excavator to enable passage through a path that had left some neighbors incommunicado.

A great storm of rain and hail collapses Zaragoza

The alderman explains that since 112 they had been warned of the forecast of heavy rain and wind, although there has not been a tornado as on other occasions in the past. “30 or 40 liters will have fallen in a moment. It’s been historic”, says Estevan. “Even the councilors have gotten down to work,” he adds.

“We do not have to regret personal injuries, but the hail was like fronton balls“, said Celia Trullén, mayoress of Albalate del Arzobispo, while assessing the damage together with the neighbors. “We are going to need help, the hail has taken everything and we have not yet spoken to the farmers,” Trullén lamented. The storm , who arrived in this region of Teruel at around 4:00 p.m., felled a tree and forced the A-1401 road between Ariño and Albalate del Arzobispo to be cut.

The inclement weather has hit the Bajo Aragón region just one year after the catastrophic rock fall last year. It was also July 6 when Andorra, Calanda and the surrounding municipalities succumbed to a storm that ended with the remaining native peach harvest, very little to tell the truth due to the late frosts that occurred in April.

The provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza and the regions of Bajo Aragón were this Thursday in orange alert for strong storms. And the forecast has come true. After 2:30 p.m., a heavy hailstorm fell on some municipalities in the Community of Calatayud and Campo de Cariñena, causing damage that is still being assessed.

Among the affected municipalities are Miedes, where the size of the hail balls was similar to that of a walnut. Paniza, Morata de Jiloca and other towns have also suffered the effects of this storm.
