It is “a new geography, which we are not used to”, noted Tuesday, July 4 the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Christophe Béchu. According to him, 553 municipalities were affected in eight days of riots throughout France, 170 of which had no “city policy” districts, the administrative name for districts formerly called “sensitive”, “popular” or ” priorities”.

If France is not in its first wave of urban violence, these had never been so widespread or generalized on the territory, from the largest urban centers to the smallest agglomerations.

By carrying out a thorough review of the local press and using provisional data from various ministries, The world looks back on these eight nights of violence.

June 27-28: riots that focus first on the Parisian suburbs

On the evening of the death of Nahel M., on Tuesday June 27, it was unsurprisingly in the suburbs of Paris, particularly in the north-west, around the city of Nanterre where the teenager was from, that the riots occurred. the most virulent. The police forces are the target of mortar fireworks, twenty vehicles are set on fire. The violence is concentrated around the districts of Zilina, Berthelot and Pablo-Picasso in Nanterre, neighbors of that of Vieux-Pont, where the young man lived.

The neighboring towns of Seine-Saint-Denis and Hauts-de-Seine are also affected: Asnières, Clichy, Colombes, Gennevilliers, Villeneuve-la-Garenne, and as far as the more gentrified southern suburbs of Paris (Vanves, Malakoff, Montrouge…).

However, the disturbances remain limited: garbage fires, destroyed street furniture. Ditto in the departments of the “big crown”, like Essonne or Yvelines. It is 50 km from Nanterre, in the town of Val-Fourré, in the agglomeration of Mantes-la-Jolie, that a first annex town hall is set on fire.

This first night was not marked by the looting of shops, which were still marginal, but by the expression of anger which resulted in clashes with the police and damage; 351 garbage cans burned, and a hundred vehicles. The ministry, which has not carried out a massive mobilization of its troops, lists twenty-five injured policemen or gendarmes.

Beyond the Ile-de-France region, incidents are rarer. A few cases of urban violence, fires or clashes with the police have been observed in Roubaix (North) or Colmar, the capital of Haut-Rhin. But out of 49 arrests, 42 take place in « zone PP » (Prefecture of police), therefore in the Paris conurbation, which then concentrated most of the troubles.
