After two dantesque stages in the Pyrenees and a fierce fight for the yellow jersey, the Tour de France returns to the flat with a 169.9 km stage between Mont-de-Marsan (Landes) and Bordeaux (Gironde). After the small sizes of the climbers, the “big thighs” will have free rein.

Bordeaux is a city that is used to the Tour de France. This is the 81st time that the Gironde prefecture will host the Grande Boucle. The last visit to the Tour, however, dates back to 2010 when the Englishman Mark Cavendish had won the 10th of his 34 stage successes

He is the master of high speed on this Tour de France. He remains on two victories in the two massive sprints since the start, in Bayonne then Nogaro. Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck) also won the last two sprints of the 2022 Tour. The Belgian, led on a set by Mathieu Van der Poel, has all the cards in hand to sign a five in a row in Bordeaux.
If surprise there must be, it can come from Caleb Ewan, the pocket Australian of Lotto-Dstny. Or why not the Frenchman from Cofidis Bryan Coquard, who seems to be on his feet. The big odds, but the great story to set a record for stage victories on the Tour, would be for Mark Cavendish (Astana), already winner in Bordeaux… 13 years ago.

“There, we return to something very traditional in the history of the Tour de France with a stage in the Landes. It will be all flat, along the Landes then the Garonne, except for a small hill which shouldn’t hurt your legs. It’s back to the capital of sprinters, Bordeaux, which we haven’t visited since 2010. Everything is done to witness a nice bunch sprint at the finish. We will arrive on the banks of the Garonne, at the Place des Quinconces. To trace the end of Bordeaux, there are necessarily things that have evolved over the past thirteen years, in particular the tramway with its rails. It is more and more complicated to arrive in the centers of the big cities. But there we found a fairly safe passage. »
