Fly on vacation without a large suitcase, but rent clothes on site: This is what a Japanese airline is offering its customers – initially for a limited period of time.

Clothing usually makes up most of the luggage for the holiday – especially if it lasts longer than just a few days. Not only does this mean that travelers’ packed suitcases have to be transported to the airport, but also that more fuel is needed to transport the luggage.

The airline Japan Airlines has developed a concept with which both can be prevented. Travelers should therefore no longer take their own clothes with them, but rent clothes for the holiday. To this end, the airline is working with the site “Any wear, anywhere”, which belongs to the Japanese fashion company Sumitomo – initially until August 31, 2024.

CO2 emissions should be reduced

The promise is that it should be possible to travel to Japan without luggage. The provider allows passengers to choose their attire a month before departure and then board the flight without having to check in their luggage or wait for it after landing. The rented clothes are already waiting for the visitors in the hotel. At the end of the stay, the items of clothing can also be returned to the hotel.

There’s a new leader: These are the best airports in the world

This concept aims to make both travel and the textile cycle more sustainable. Anyone who does without a ten-kilogram suitcase reduces their carbon footprint on the flight by nine percent, according to the “Any Wear, Everywhere” website. In addition, only clothing that has been sorted out by manufacturers or that has already been used is made available. After use, the garments are washed and ironed. During the pilot, the airline plans to see how passengers respond to the offer and then decide whether to continue.
