After 25 years of being a surgeon, Pedro González y Estévez had gone through more than one unfair situation in the hospitals where he worked, which led him to remember his admiration for Benito Juarezso he took the time to study law at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas at 42 years of age, concluding his second career with a brilliant exam.
With two professional titles, that of medical surgeon and that of Degree in Law, the question arose, what career to follow? In the first he already had recognition that endorsed his career, while the other was new, so Dr. Pedro González decided to mix both professions.
“I began to be interested, knowing legal medicine and law in medical problems, so much of my life I have dedicated myself to medical defense and I can say that up to now I have not suffered setbacks with my clients. The prestige of a doctor, I think, dragged him to the legal profession”, indicates the double professional.
He adds that he also has a passion for teaching that led him to teach, teaching legal medicine at the Law School, in addition to surgery and propaedeutics in medicine.
“I know, for example, the anatomy of the human body, the same thing that a forensic doctor knows, only I have had a much higher percentage of opening people in life, to save their lives… In my career I continue to have successes as a surgeon and I continue to have successes as an expert in alleged medical crimes”, he points out.
González y Estévez said that this double career has led him to learn the legal framework of the medical function together with the doctors, to the point of pointing out that a large part of the medical-legal problems is because the doctors do not learn law; the same goes for lawyers who have a hard time learning medicine.
“When I issue an opinion, I issue it based on medical science… I have been a surgeon for 50 years and 25 of them, the last, of being a lawyer and I have the opportunity to play on both courts at the same time.”
Based on his experience within the legal profession, he indicates that in many cases the lawsuits against a doctor are unfounded and generally there is another colleague behind the complaint, badly advising the person.
“I can tell you about a case of a recent university graduate, who died due to poor delivery care and when we go to investigate, it happens that the hospital where she is treated has many deficiencies. So many of the negligence for which a doctor is accused, there is generally a third party responsible, which are the institutions, ”she says.
Recognizes that medicine and law are disciplines in which one cannot stop studying since new devices, techniques, and medicines appear; while in law there are new laws, new applications, technology immersed in the exercise of the legal profession, so you cannot stop studying.
