“Elqui beekeepers” strengthen alliance with the municipality in pursuit of tourism and education

Through the concept of “Apiturismo”, the group seeks to ensure that the trade of beekeeping prevails, as well as the products derived from it, in addition to raising awareness among the population about the care of bees.

under the motto “For a Sustainable Beekeeping – From the South of the World”in the month of September, the 48th Apimondia 2023 Congress will take place, an event that will be the meeting point for the productive, research and export sector in Chile, around bees and the commune of vicuna will have their own representatives. It is the Association “Beekeepers of the Elqui Valley”, who will arrive at Espacio Riesco, in Santiago.

For this reason, the mayor Rafael Vera Castillo recently met with the members of the group to announce the delivery of a monetary contribution. Instance in which commitments were also established, strengthening alliances and collaboration to work in the line of education and tourism, under the concept of “bee tourism”seeking to highlight the trade of beekeeping, the products derived from it, as well as to raise awareness among the population about the care of bees, transcendental insects in pollination, a vital process for the preservation of ecosystems.

In this sense, the mayor of the commune pointed out that “this is a group that works spectacularly, since this project started, a lot of progress has been made (…) they are one of the few Chilean organizations that are invited and I came to give them the news that we had approved the grant for a significant value, but less than what they need, is an allocation of $500,000. We are giving them this contribution so that they feel supported by the municipality in this type of activity”, he pointed out.

Along the same lines, Luisa Flores Alcayaga, secretary of “Elqui Beekeepers” He maintained that this meeting seeks to strengthen “the support that he has always given us and so that he is aware that we want to do great things and work hand in hand with the municipality to reach the entire Vicuña commune.” Regarding Apimondia 2023, he added that “It is very important to participate, because you can see the technology, the advances and the new projects that are coming for beekeepers in 2024”.

Finally, Luisa Flores refers to one of the main purposes that they have as a group “we want to do Apiturismo to make people aware of the importance of bees, that they know the hives, that they know the world of bees and link it with the nature and conserve this being that is so important, considered the most important insect on the planet”.

Talks and Educational Workshops

It is essential to raise awareness among the population about the care of beesThus, “Beekeepers of Elqui”, among its main objectives, seek to generate a link with the community and the environment, through education. This, through talks and workshops focused mainly on educational establishments, as well as the community in general.

This was supported by Carlos Santander, partner of the group, in charge of the educational area “what we do in schools is relate bees to this technological and societal change that is occurring so rapidlywe do a part that has to do with technology, digitization and the future of beekeeping (…) they can approach our group, we are delighted to coordinate, we can participate and share this world of beekeeping with children, young people ”.

For his part, the mayor Rafael Vera “what they are doing, visiting different schools giving their knowledge, is important and additionally, in terms of tourism, to be able to provide a tool so that those who come to our commune have the possibility of knowing a such an important center (…) what is up to us is to continue supporting, collaborating with the good initiatives that are implemented here because we understand that this is good for everyone”.

Beekeeping is dedicated to raising bees and providing them with the necessary care in order to obtain and consume the products that can be made and collected.. Today its main causes of mortality are due to the impact of climate change, chemicals and parasitic diseases. In this sense, the Elqui Beekeepers Association continues to develop various initiatives to preserve them and protect their habitat.
